Workshop Description
This training will focus on helpful methods of incorporating play into the therapeutic setting. Utilizing fun play activities with clients of all age groups, clinicians can engage their clients in a creative manner, helping clients to feel more comfortable and share their thoughts and feelings more easily.
Workshop Learning Objectives
- Differentiate play as engagement vs. play as assessment tool
- Apply developmentally appropriate play-based interventions to build rapport
- Identify indicators of sibling conflict vs. potential abuse through play themes
- Family dynamics in relation to play
- Address ethical and professional boundaries when working with children
- Utilize structured and unstructured activities in both in person session and virtually
- Activity - demonstration of play techniques and review of toys/activities
Presenters
Carmen Martinez is a licensed clinical counselor with a background in early childhood education with 11 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. She has previously worked with children of all ages in different programs such as Headstart, preschool, afterschool, therapeutic school, and health department settings.
Juan Nevarez-Barron is a bilingual family and youth therapist with over 8 years of experience providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive care. He integrates clinical therapy, family support, and community-based work to address both individual needs and systemic barriers.

- Includes a networking luncheon beginning at 12:15 pm
2.0 Continuing Education clock hours will be awarded for Illinois Social Workers and Professional Counselors. Registration deadline is May 15, 2026.
